The SAB World of Beer's top six of 2016

How did that happen? Wasn’t it just yesterday that we were bidding farewell to 2015 and wishing everyone a happy new year? And here we are again: taking a look back at the year that has been and gearing up for 2017.

As we look back at what 2016 brought to the World of Beer, we’re amazed at what an incredible year it was. Here’s a list of our top six of 2016.

1. We won a major tourism award

This year, we were the very proud recipients of the highly regarded Lilizela Tourism Award for best visitor experience in the culture and lifestyle category.

The Lilizela Awards recognise and reward organisations in the tourism sector who strive to deliver world-class products and service, and are voted for, in the first instance, by the public. The shortlisted entrants are then assessed by a team of seasoned experts in the tourism industry. The award was a major milestone for the World of Beer, and we were thrilled to be recognised by our customers and the industry at large.

We also retained our five-star grading from the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa this year, and received a Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor. All of these awards are thanks to our incredible team, who continue to uphold the highest standards, and our visitors, who make our work so worthwhile. Thank you!

2. We launched a new tour to Alrode Brewery

In August 2016, we launched a brand new tour to SAB's Alrode Brewery, the largest brewery in Africa and, until very recently, the largest in the southern hemisphere.

The tour begins at the World of Beer, with visitors enjoying the first two thirds of our award-winning beer tour, before being whisked off to Alrode to experience the brewing process first-hand.

The scale of Alrode has to be seen to be believed. It boasts a whopping capacity of 8.8-million hectolitres of beer per year, amounting to 28% of SAB’s 31.4-million hectolitre capacity in South Africa. It has three Steinecker brewhouses on site (two 660-hectolitre brew length and one enormous 1 500-hectolitre brew length), 96 fermentation vessels, 60 maturation vessels, three filters and 26 bright beer tanks (the tanks in which beer is placed so that it can mature, clarify and carbonate).

The tour ends with a late afternoon lunch in the World of Beer Tap Room.

3. Our beer-pairings drew the crowds

Throughout the year, we continued to offer our monthly beer-pairing lunches to the public. These decadent afternoons involve five courses, each paired with a different SAB brand, and guests are guided through the process by an expert in the industry.

Launched in 2015, our beer-pairing lunches gained momentum in 2016 and advance bookings are now essential. They're also the ideal accompaniment to conferences and team-building events and corporate bookings can easily be arranged.

The menu changes from month to month and our next beer pairing will be a Valentine’s Day pairing on 11 February 2017.

4. We made some incredible new beers available

There’s nothing better than looking over our panoramic views of Newtown from the patio of our Tap Room with an ice-cold beer in hand. And our Tap Room is nothing but well stocked with the finest SAB brands – including the very latest offerings.

This year, we added two new beers to our offering: SAB's delicious new tequila-flavoured beer, Liberado, and the new craft sensation, Carver's Weiss.

Liberado is all about combining beer’s smooth and easy drinkability with tequila’s zing and unapologetic ferocity. It’s a brave and daring beverage, perfect for the independent and courageous. Carver’s Weiss is a German-style Weissbier (or Hefeweizen) made with a blend of malted wheat and barley. It’s everything you've come to expect from a good Weiss: slightly cloudy in appearance (a result of its unfiltered yeast that remains in suspension); low on bitterness and high in zesty fruit when it comes to taste; and offering a pleasant banana aroma and a creamy mouthfeel.

5. We combined great beer with great food

Our food and beer-pairings are one thing (one amazing, not-to-be-missed thing), but if you enjoy cooking at home too, we put together a series of great beer-inspired recipes this year.

Think delicious snacks, like stout candied bacon, hearty meals like stout root fries and stout lamb chops, and, if you’re in for something sweet, a truly wicked triple ginger and stout cake

We’re always looking for new ideas. Feel free to share your best beer recipes with us.

6. We hosted some incredible events

From Valentine’s Day special offers, to St Paddy’s Day celebrations, April Fools’ Day comedy showsEaster beer hunts and haunted Halloween tours, 2016 was jam-packed with great activities. We also celebrated our 21st birthday in May, and hosted numerous sporting events.

Be sure to keep tabs on our blog, as well as our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts, for news on all the amazing offers we'll be bringing your way in 2017.

Also, just a reminder, we’ll be open throughout the festive season, including New Year’s Eve and New Year's Day. Bring your friends and come and enjoy a tour, a tasting or lunch in our Tap Room.

Happy new year to all!
