Beer lovers, did you know that Saturday 3 February is National Beer Day? This year we’re brewing up a delicious list of things to do to celebrate this much-loved amber liquid.
Obviously our first choice would be for you to pop down to the SAB World of Beer in Newtown, Johannesburg. It’d be worth your while, because we’ve discounted our popular beer tour. Bring your friends and come and learn all you ever wanted to know – and more – about beer.
The first South African National Beer Day was held last year, with more than 50 events and promotions staged in seven provinces across South Africa. This year, there’s even more on offer. South African Breweries has come up with a list of beer festivals where lovers of ales, lagers, weisses or stouts (and myriad other styles) can find their choice of beer.
Adding flavour to almost every event will be the added bonuses of lively music, delicious food or good company – and sometimes all three. So, take a look:
SAB World of Beer
Naturally, we’re starting right here. Remember there are discounts on our tours (it's only R115 per person), and that the last one sets off at 5pm. Don’t forget to buy tickets online as they are limited. You could also opt for our beer tour and tasting package or join us for something to eat in the Tap Room afterwards.
Want to really feel part of National Beer Day? Well, considering that it has branches in Cape Town, Pretoria and Johannesburg, Beerhouse is a good place to start. The Beerhouse hubs will be celebrating by knocking 50% off their #DrinkLocal tasting trays (six beers, all from breweries within 20km of that particular Beerhouse), and with free beer tastings at scheduled times throughout the day.
Urban Brewing Company, Hout Bay
Cape Town-based Urban Brewing Company will be offering Bavarian Weisswurst sausage specials in the morning, along with day-long live music acts, burger-and-beer combo specials, prizes, giveaways and even some sneaky beer pong. If you’re in the Mother City, join them.
A Touch of Madness, Cape Town
Mad about beer? Come by and sample some of the 12 craft beers on tap at this pub in Observatory, Cape Town. The festivities start at noon and include DJs from Selective Hearing playing chilled beats from 3pm till 8pm. There’s beer, there’s food (burgers, nachos, chicken wings), what’s not to like?
Banana Jam Cafe, Cape Town
We’re not sure how many ships have been launched at the Cape of Storms, but we do know that you can be there when the Kenilworth venue’s Afro Caribbean Brewing Company launches its Atlantic Storm Golden Stout at Kenilworth's Banana Jam Cafe. Yup, come on by and try the new beer and a special food-and-beer-pairing platter. Plus, it’s happy hour all day!
Dockside Ale House, Port Elizabeth
If National Beer Day finds you in the Friendly City, remember that the Dockside Ale House is celebrating by offering all 500ml beers for R20 between noon and 4pm.
The Nottingham Road Brewing Company, Nottingham Road
Long before the craft beer explosion, there was the Nottingham Road Brewing Company. Whether it’s a Pickled Pig Cappuccino Porter or a Wobbling Summer Ale that you think will slake your thirst, this is the place to celebrate National Beer Day if you are in the gorgeous KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. It’s buy one, get one free between 8am and 4pm on select draughts. Lovely!
Ales for Tails
Visit Ales for Tails and you will always have a great tale to tell. After all, every brew sold raises funds for animal shelters in KwaZulu-Natal. Pop by this Durban-born and -bred fundraiser and enjoy the fruits of labour on offer – for the first time – from commercial and craft breweries. But act quickly – tickets are limited and previous events have been sold out.
Buy tickets here.
Celebrate National Beer Day with the annual Zebonkey "Beer Bottle Swap". All you have to do is bring in a beer – any beer, be it commercial, craft or home brew – and the Zebonkey team will swap it for any bottle from their range!
