On 15 May, we’ll be celebrating another year of sharing our love and passion for beer. The SAB World of Beer’s 22nd birthday is around the corner, and to celebrate we’re giving away two tickets for our beer tour and tasting.
The World of Beer, then known as the Centenary Centre, was officially opened by former president Nelson Mandela in Newtown in 1995 – a year that marked South Africa’s first full year as a democracy and a century of beer brewing at SAB.
“Inevitably, a product as integral to the culture and economy of a society as is yours, traces in its own history, the history of its society ... But in addition to its instructive lessons, the centre will without doubt help promote tourism in this area and Johannesburg as a whole. It is, therefore, a valuable addition to the economic assets of Gauteng province,” said Mandela at the launch.
The World of Beer certainly didn’t disappoint. “We’re extremely proud of what we’ve achieved over the past 22 years. We’ve twice been named South Africa’s number-one tourist attraction and also won the award for best visitor experience in the Culture and Lifestyle category in Gauteng in last year’s Lilizela Tourism Awards,” said World of Beer general manager Tony Rubin.
“We were one of the first attractions in the Newtown Cultural Precinct and our beer tours continue to offer visitors a unique look into the history of beer and the beer-brewing process,” he added.
